Exceptional Care for Every Tooth

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatment or when a large filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity, the more likely it is that a crown will be needed. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth are subjected to tremendous pressures by those muscles. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, providing strength and protecting the tooth against breakage.

It takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. On the first visit, the decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. An impression is made of the prepared tooth. After the impression is made, a temporary crown is made and cemented into place. Approximately two weeks later, the patient returns to remove the temporary crown and set the new crown that was custom made at the laboratory. The crown will be checked to make sure it is the ideal color and fit and then will be permanently cemented in its place.

Crowns are often able to restore a tooth’s health, appearance, and structure. After only two office visits, this routine procedure can transform damaged teeth into a strong, dazzling smile.
